Educational & Funny
Tounge-in-cheek
Humor rooted in the truthOn the other hand, the book unveils the truth about the Clinton scandal and all its supporting players. If you didn't read any of the Starr report, this book provides some of the best excerpts. And, the Professor's humor is your Dramamine to help you through it. Read about Clinton apologists like Barney Frank and learn what it is to be a "homophobaphobe."
It's been said: "all good humor is rooted in the truth." Perhaps that's what makes this book so remarkably funny.

Add this one to the list of manitory books for middle schoolGordon's life should be an inspiration to all Americans. His life was very hard and he overcame racism and bigottry throughtout his youth and early manhood and probably even to this day even though I hope not! Gordon was able to overcome major adversities ones that I doubt I could have survived. The book was so moving and real that I read portions to my sons and were they wide eyed during the recounting of Gordon's homeless time sleeping in streetcars as a school student. The description of room he finally did get which was so filthy and vile that none of us would allow our dogs in. I could go on forever but I don't want to give anymore away of an excellent book :-).
By the way if you are reading this review it's obvious that you should read the book!
This book should be required reading for every American.

Very Helpful
This is an Excellent Book!Even if you never thought about staying at a National Park Lodge get this book. There are some wonderful places to stay and staying in the park, even if it costs a little more, adds so much to the total park experience.
I will not be without this book when I travel. I just wish the authors would write a similar book for State Parks.

Hiking Death Valley : A guide to its natural wonders
Definitive guide to exploring Death ValleyThis book takes it to the next level for me. It is excellently laid out, totally comprehensive regarding the hikes it discusses and has well-chosen photos, genuinely useful maps and lots of interesting illustrations. I particularly liked the sections on the Last Chance Range and the Panamints.
Most importantly the author exactly captures the appeal of the place - the space, the astonishing world of rock, the light and the solitude - and does a nice job of emphasizing the need for us desert users to practice the "minimum impact" approach without ramming it down our throats.
Finally, he has wisely left out a few "secrets" - it'd be tough to explore if *everything* was already in a book!

The Return of the Wolf to YellowstoneIf you have any interest in the return of the wolf to Yellowstone, this book will definitely be an asset to your library.
I would rate this book a '5', if it was the illustrated issue.
A fresh perspective on wolvesMcNamee himself is a character in this book, giving it an inviting and personal air, but does not force his views on the reader. He shows the reader a federal wildlife agent tracking a wolf-killer outside of Red Lodge and even opens the window on curious rivalries and tensions between agencies involved in various chapters of the wolf story. Parts of the book are almost dramatic in their intensity, while others slow the pace as the wolves romp and play.
A smooth reading, funny yet informative book.

Satisfying and InspirationalIn refreshing contrast to that destructive tendency, this book does an excellent job of peeling back the aura around Rosa Parks and depicting her as the simple, virtuous woman that she is. Brinkley's depiction of her is refreshingly human and honest, and he does a magnificent job of describing her in the simple, straightforward way that so characterizes her.
Also worthy of note is Brinkley's willingness to include so many of Rosa Park's circle of acquaintances in his narrative. From her hard-drinking yet loyal husband to people who have met her only briefly, he touches on their influences on her life, their reaction to her, and what they all mean within the greater scope of her place in our history and society.
Regrettably, whites - with a few notable exceptions - are seen as oppressive, racist boors with a permanent vendetta. Even at that time, that was not true.
Overall, this book is an excellent, enjoyable, and enlightening read - and one that does refreshing justice to the woman and warrior that Rosa Parks is.
Vivid Portrait of an American Heroine
UNAPPRECIATED ACTIVISTWe are comfortable with the image of the mild mannered Christian woman who always stayed in the background. Ah, but just how much do we really know about Rosa Parks except for the myth created? Are we really appreciative and aware of this woman who has been ignored only to be thought of again when politically expedient for others? Douglas Brinkley, in this short concise biography, removes the shroud of obscurity and myth about Rosa Parks. For the first time we are shown that the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement" was more militant than we suspect. A highly intelligent and organized person, Mrs. Parks was an activist long before her famous bus ride and was very informed about what was going on in the movement locally as well as globally.
The Rosa Parks presented in this text had a great aura of spirituality, strength and dignity that exuded calm during a period of unrest. Misunderstood by her peers and her friends Rosa Parks emerged as the underlying spirit that enabled the movement to begin its course of action.
We learn about the Rosa Parks who was a quiet young woman but had a fierce anger against injustice. She stayed an activist throughout her life inspite of the personal hardships in her marriage and with her mother. She is a woman of great spiritual strength and power. Brinkley presents us with a portrait of a woman that we never knew and have come to rediscover.
